Description

Two shots. Janet Feldman stood frozen in the darkened office suite, terrified, and unsure what to do. Where was her boss? Dead? Alive? She heard voices; two unknown men, and quickly hid beneath her desk. Though it was very late, she’d reluctantly agreed to return to the office to meet with her boss, “or else,” he’d said. San Francisco, the City by the Bay, was to be a new beginning, a new home, and a new focus, but now what? Another frightening event to deal with?
Ray Martindale, Janet’s boss, and Vice President of GHD Global Security and Investigations, was a bear to work with. Gruff, unappreciative, demanding, crude – and any other number of equally disgusting adjectives captured the unpleasant essence of the man. On occasion, she’d snap back at him, but with little impact. Instead, his verbal abuse would escalate, and not just aimed at her but at everyone in the office.
Alex Paulsen and Tony Cho, were co-workers, and guardians to some degree. They worried about her and how Ray treated her, but Janet assured them she could handle him. Even so, they didn’t stop worrying. They’d take her to lunch and occasionally enjoy dinner after work together, sometimes with other staff, but always to commiserate, and laugh, and bolster each other sufficiently to prepare for another day at work – not too many more hours away. Such is was this particular night. After dinner, they walked her to the office and waited until she was safely inside the building.
However, gunshots late the night before, brought Janet face-to-face later the following morning, with law enforcement personnel. No, she didn’t see the two unknown men, she only heard them talking. No, she had no idea where her boss was or what happened to him. All she could tell them was what little she actually did see, when she got back to the dark office suite, and what little she heard. But she also mentioned something she did not see, when they showed her around the office, and that was a missing piece of decorative carpet. It was a prominent piece found in the conference room, and it bore the company logo. But, no, she had no idea who would take it or why. Additionally, Ray’s office had been disturbed and a hidden wall safe left open. And no, she didn’t know anything about the safe either. Janet’s head spun with each unanswerable question, plus, she had questions of her own, like did they consider her a suspect. No, they assured her.
Sometime later in the morning, and with the help of the police, she slipped out of the downtown office building posing as a housekeeper. Janet ended up at a safehouse in the Sunset District, near the beach and under the watchful eye of Officer Emily Perez. Little did she know, however, that Officer Perez had been threatened and reluctantly agreed to help with a scheme to kidnap Janet. In fact, the safe house, wasn’t so safe. One thing led to another, as Janet was left alone for a length of time, then forced into another vehicle and whisked away. The police, in the meantime, were frantically trying to locate Janet and Officer Perez, since neither had checked in or arrived at the real safe house.
Enter, Craig Stevens, sent by headquarters to oversee the San Francisco location of Global in Ray’s absence. One look at a photo in Janet’s personnel file put into motion a new set of events. So, while Janet fears the worst in the hands of her new captors, as she struggles with her hands tied and her mouth gagged, another vehicle is in close pursuit driven by two Latino men and determined to do whatever it takes to stop the captors and take possession of Janet. They manage to do so then hustle her farther south, out of the Bay Area, and to another house perched on a bluff overlooking the Pacific Ocean.
Is Janet really safe with these two men or is she, once again, at the mercy of two more people with a secret mission to snatch her for reasons known only to them.
